The back depends on the style. Studs sit on a straight post with a separate back that holds them on; a friction (push) back is easiest, and a screw back is the most secure for everyday wear. Hoops and huggies close on themselves with a hinged latch or snap, so they need no separate back.

Which metal can I choose?

Every pair of diamond earrings comes in 14K or 18K gold — yellow, white or rose — or in platinum. White gold and platinum keep the diamonds looking bright and icy; yellow and rose gold give a warmer tone. Platinum is the most durable for something you wear every day.

How do I care for diamond earrings?

Take them off before you sleep, shower or swim, and store the pair together so you don't lose one. Clean them now and then with warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then pat dry. Check the backs are tight and have the settings looked at once in a while, like any fine jewelry.
