How much does an oval engagement ring cost?

Accepted Answer

An oval engagement ring costs the setting plus the diamond. The setting price depends on the style and the metal; platinum costs more than 14K gold. The diamond price depends mostly on carat weight. In our stock, a 2 carat oval costs about one and a half times a 1 carat of the same grade, not double.

How big is an oval diamond at each carat weight?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the carat and how long the stone is cut. A typical 1 carat oval in our stock measures about 8.3 × 5.6 mm, and a typical 2 carat about 10.3 × 7.1 mm. Two ovals of the same weight can differ by up to about 1 mm in length, so compare the millimeters, not just the carats.

Are oval diamonds cheaper than round diamonds?

Accepted Answer

Not with lab grown diamonds. We compared ovals and rounds of the same carat, color and clarity in our own stock, and they cost about the same. The oval was often a little more. The idea that ovals are cheaper comes from mined diamonds, where cutting a round wastes more of the rough crystal.

What an oval does give you is more length for the same weight, so it can look bigger than a round at the same price.

Which setting styles can I choose for an oval diamond?

Accepted Answer

You can set an oval in almost any style. The main choices are solitaire, halo, hidden halo, three stone, bezel and vintage. Each one changes the look: a solitaire shows the whole stone, a halo makes it look bigger, and three stone covers more of the finger. Every setting in the grid above is made for an oval.

Which metals can I choose for an oval engagement ring?

Accepted Answer

Every oval setting comes in platinum or in 14K or 18K gold, in yellow, white or rose. Yellow and rose gold are warm, so a diamond with a faint warm tint looks natural in them, and you can choose a lower color grade. White gold and platinum look bright and cool. Platinum costs more than gold.

14K or 18K? 18K is 75% gold and has a richer color. 14K is 58.3% gold, so it is a little harder and resists scratches better.

Question 6

What wedding band goes with an oval engagement ring?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how low your oval sits. If the setting sits high, a straight band slides under it and sits flush. If the oval sits low or has a halo, a straight band may leave a gap, so a curved or notched band that hugs the stone fits better.
