What is a bezel setting?

A bezel setting is a thin band of metal that wraps around the edge of the diamond and holds it in place, instead of prongs. On an oval ring, the rim follows the stone's curved outline. A full bezel goes all the way around the diamond; a half bezel covers only the two long sides.

Are bezel settings secure?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A bezel is one of the most secure ways to hold a diamond. The metal rim guards the diamond's edge, where chips usually happen, and there are no prongs to catch on clothes or bend over time. That makes it a good choice for busy hands, sports and hands-on jobs.

A half bezel protects the two covered sides but leaves the ends open, so it is a little less protective than a full bezel.

Does a bezel setting reduce sparkle?

Accepted Answer

A little, from the sides. A full bezel blocks some of the light that would enter through the side of the diamond. But most of a diamond's sparkle comes from light entering through the top, so a well-cut oval still looks bright and lively in a bezel. A half bezel lets in more side light.

Does a bezel make a diamond look bigger or smaller?

It depends on the metal. A white gold or platinum rim blends in with the diamond, so the stone can look a little bigger. A yellow or rose gold rim outlines the diamond with a band of color, so it looks framed rather than bigger. Neither is better; it comes down to the look you like.

What size oval diamond works in a bezel setting?

Accepted Answer

Any size works, and we check that your diamond fits the setting before checkout. Keep in mind that the metal rim adds a thin border around the stone, so from the top the ring looks slightly bigger than the diamond alone. Compare stones by their size in millimeters, not only their carat weight.

How much does an oval bezel engagement ring cost?

Accepted Answer

An oval bezel ring costs the setting plus the diamond. The setting price depends on the metal and on any extra diamonds on the band; platinum costs more than 14K gold. The diamond is priced by carat and grade: in our stock, a 2 carat oval costs about one and a half times a 1 carat of the same grade.
